Essential soft skills your corporate team can learn on a Learning Management System

Site Online Learning | December 5, 2019 | Read Time: 3 mins

In a modern world consumed by technology, it’s become more challenging for companies to hire employees with both sound technical and soft skills. While technical skills can be learned easily, soft skills can require a bit more finesse. A current McKinsey report states that 40% of employers are finding the hiring process a challenge as younger candidates lack basic communication skills and the ability to work within a team (1).

To compensate the lack of soft skills amongst the up and coming generation, numerous businesses around the world have begun putting their new recruits through a soft skills training program. Much of this can be done through online training programs delivered through an advanced LMS. Here is how we would deliver a soft skills training program to our own team using our LMS Tempus:

Communicating in a clear, concise, but personable tone is a balancing act that requires an individual to have excellent interpersonal skills and be adaptive in the way they express or take in information.

This can be done using scenario-based learning. For example, you can train your employees to communicate effectively by creating a mock virtual scenario where your employees must pitch a business case or idea. They can use critical thinking and the varied course outcomes to decipher the communication strategies that are most effective.

Whether they’re introverted or extroverted, successful individuals know that in order to grow they must be open to another person’s perspective regardless if they agree on that viewpoint or not.  This is where empathy is essential. It enables your employees to understand and be compassionate towards someone else’s point of view and/or situation. You can have all the technical skills in the world, but if you don’t have empathy you are at a clear disadvantage when it comes to developing healthy relationships (business or personal) that will last.

Empathy can be taught by putting your employees in another person’s shoes. For example, in the scenario-based learning solution we used for teaching how to use effective communication techniques to pitch a business solution, place the employee on the customer’s end. Have them understand the other person’s constraints and restrictions.

Discussion boards on LMS’s are another great way of showing employees that the same subject can be interpreted by two people differently.

A skill that is often underrated, the ability to listen with intent is crucial to success. The strategies your employees implement to troubleshoot, keep themselves from disrupting conversation, and to take in what’s being said are just some of the skills that can be implemented in your corporate training.

Interrupting someone’s point of view to tell your own is one of the most common mistakes made during conversations. This can be rectified. Through audio and video tutorials, employees can be taught not just the importance of letting someone finish their point of view, but also how to remember rebuttal points till the other person has had their say.

Critical thinking.

Critical thinking has the power to shape, cultivate and strengthen a team and their goals. The importance of knowing the ‘how’ and ‘why’ and assessing the reasons to what makes an individual believe in a concept or system will challenge your employee to think critically and logically.

Game based learning is perfect for developing critical thinking. By allowing your employees to create their own path to success while providing real time feedback, you can develop critical thinking and confidence amongst your troops.

The use of soft skills may seem like a simple concept, but without being aware of how to apply these skills it can be difficult for your employees to unlock their real potential and create a healthy and positive work environment.
