ELearning trends of 2018

Site Online Learning | July 2, 2018

The eLearning industry is constantly evolving and adapting whilst offering possibilities of convenience, accessibility, and personalisation that training has never seen before.

We have approached the second half of 2018 and the industry is going through a phase of significant and rapid “learning revolution”.

Here, we look at 5 of the most noteworthy learning trends of the year.

1. Micro-moments and Micro-learning

Any time you turn to an Internet-enabled device to find something, learn something, watch something or purchase something—you are experiencing a micro-moment.

A micro-moment is an intent-driven action powered by an Internet-enabled device.

With so much information available at our fingertips, organisations need to ensure learners are receiving the right information. Organisations must develop just-in-time learning solutions to meet them where they are – on any device.

2. Gamification

Gamification is basically an online game developed with a reward or points system to motivate and engage learners. Growth Engineering highlighted levels, points, progress bars and rewards are a sample of what games can incorporate to encourage and motivate learners.

Gaming is one of the best types of learning, because it takes adults back to play and learning which we all did as children and the retention rate is higher.

Gamified learning:

  • Boosts motivation
  • Builds engagement
  • Increases retention
  • Enables you to provide performance feedback and
  • Enhances productivity

3. Video-based learning

Videos make learning effective, fun, responsive, and fruitful. They can take on many forms from short bite-sized ones to serve micro learning needs to interactive videos, scenarios, simulations, screencasts, and animated and real videos.

Statistically speaking – Videos retain an average of 77% of viewers to the last second; The average retention rate of personalized videos is 35% higher than non-personalised videos.

4. Scenario-based learning

Scenario-based eLearning combines the relevance of stories with the realism of hands-on training in a virtual environment. A number of surveys and studies in the past two decades have shown that Scenario-Based Training leads to increased motivation and confidence amongst trainees.

Scenario-Based Training is most effective when used in cases based on actual, rather than hypothetical scenarios. These learning experiences become more valuable for the learners as they not only get to experience the situation first-hand but area actually required to solve them and develop the needed skills in the process.

5. Mobile learning

There’s a reason why more and more companies are pumping money into mobile learning technology and mobile app development year after year. Mobile apps are one of the hottest mobile learning trends driving the market today.

If you’re a smartphone user, you’d know that pretty much everything you do –dropping in a message to someone, hunting for a restaurant nearby, getting your daily scoop of news, and so on– is through apps. The formats of mobile apps and mobile learning technology for learning are remarkably different from traditional eLearning.
