When you are in the market for an LMS, it is critical to compare and contrast all options, services, and features available.

With budgets at stake, it’s important to find the best learning management system to meet your needs. These 5 questions will help you focus your search, selection, and implementation efforts.

01. Why do you need an LMS?

  • Administration – The ability to easily manage and administer the learning function including classroom, enrollments, course catalog, instructors, etc.
  • Facilitating Learning – The ability to facilitate, manage, and build all eLearning programs and courses.
  • Company-Wide Solution – The LMS can be used throughout the entire company, rather than only for the learning/training department.
  • Anywhere 24/7 Access – If this is the case, the LMS must be a web or cloud-based application that allows you to access your eLearning and training courses anywhere, anytime.

02. What LMS features are most important?

03. What is your budget?

04. Will you host the LMS or the vendor?

If you choose to purchase LMS software, you will need to install, maintain, and back up the system using your own resources and servers. An alternative is to have a vendor host the LMS for you to alleviate the IT headaches and keep the system backed up.

Of course, not every vendor will give you this option, so you may be in a situation where you are in love with the product, but not happy with the hosting schema. Be ready to compromise!

05. What support services do you offer?

It’s important to know how the LMS vendor resolves issues with the solution before signing on the dotted line. Be sure to ask if there are any associated costs for customer or technology support services.

During this discussion, ask if the data collected and stored in the LMS can be extracted in a format compatible with other systems.

Although you might feel confident about a specific LMS now, you may decide to change LMSs down the road. This information is beneficial for making that switch.
