Mobiles provide a one-to-one relationship with its owner, always on, always there, and personalised. Research shows that the anytime and anywhere learning opportunity enables learners to utilise their spare time productively.
As the eLearning community has grown to embrace mobile technology and learning-on-the-go, the terms “mobile learning” and “microlearning” have quickly exceeded buzzword status and are becoming essential elements of effective eLearning strategies.
Mobile learning (i.e., incorporating mobile devices in the learning process) has been on the rise alongside consumer mobile adoption and shows no signs of slowing down. KPCB* recently reported that 87% of young adults say their smartphone never leaves their side.
This means organisations have an increasingly connected and upwardly mobile workforce. The opportunity is there for training and development teams to tap into mobile phone usage and develop solutions for a workforce on the move.
Embracing the use of mobile devices in learning has several benefits, such as enabling learning at the point-of-need and social learning. As Millennials enter the workforce, mobile will continue to be an important element of eLearning best practices.
How can micro learning support mobile learning?
Google argues that there are three crucial ways to meet customers during micro-moments. When applied in the L&D environment, employees replace customers:
- Be there. Expect the micro-moments for learners in your organisation and then commit to being there to help when those moments occur. This requires aligning business goals with training objectives to ensure the learning initiative delivers the intended outcome.
- Be useful. It’s critical to first assess and understand the needs of your audience. Having relevant and reliable content available to your audience at the moment the need occurs enhances the learner experience and keeps them coming back.
- Be quick. The mobile experience must be fast and frictionless, or else you will lose your audience in a matter of seconds. The technology should be designed with speed and functionality in mind.
To fully engage learners, organisations should aim to enhance learning experience by presenting blended lessons with multi-media rich, bit-sized, interactive elements.
